Strong in Grace

by | Jun 16, 2026

Ever feel like you’re hiking uphill with a 120-pound backpack strapped to your shoulders? That’s what living the Christian life feels like when we’re trying to earn God’s approval through our own effort. But what if I told you there’s a better way—a way that feels more like clipping into a tow rope that pulls you effortlessly to the summit?

The Apostle Paul, writing from a dark prison cell knowing his execution was imminent, penned these powerful words to his spiritual son Timothy: “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:1). Think about that. A man facing death didn’t tell Timothy to work harder, try more, or figure it out on his own. He pointed him to grace.

The Difference Between Saving Grace and Sustaining Grace

Most Christians understand saving grace—that unmerited favor we receive when we accept Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us we’re saved by grace through faith, not by works. But Paul is talking about something deeper here: sustaining grace. This is the fuel that keeps you going when life gets hard, when relationships break down, when you face financial struggles, or when you’re dealing with the wreckage of your own choices.

Sustaining grace is like the charger you keep in your car, at work, and at home. You wouldn’t dream of leaving without it because you know you’ll need that power source. That’s what God’s grace is to the believer—constant, available, and sufficient for every challenge.

Living From What Christ Has Done, Not What You Can Do

Here’s the game-changer: strong Christians live from what Christ has done for them, not from what they can do for Him. When you’re living from a place of performance, you’re carrying that heavy backpack up the mountain. But when you live from Christ’s finished work, you’ve clipped into the tow rope of His grace, and He pulls you forward.

Paul experienced this firsthand. When he begged God to remove his “thorn in the flesh,” Jesus responded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Paul learned to boast in his weakness because that’s when Christ’s power showed up strongest.

What Grace Looks Like in Daily Life

People strong in grace don’t stay stuck in shame when they fail. They run back to Jesus, confess their sin, and receive His mercy—which is always greater than their failure. They invest in others through encouragement, forgiveness, and patience. They suffer well, staying focused on their mission like a soldier, disciplined like an athlete, and persistent like a farmer trusting the harvest will come.

Most importantly, they remember Jesus daily—the One who rose from the dead, who prayed in the garden, “Not my will, but yours be done.” He’s our example of grace under pressure.

Your Next Step

Here’s the beautiful truth John reminds us of: “We have all received grace upon grace from his fullness” (John 1:16). Like waves crashing on the shore, God’s grace never stops coming. You don’t have to wonder if there’s enough grace for your situation. There is. There always will be.

So here’s your challenge this week: Identify one area where you’re trying to muscle through on your own strength. Confess to God that you can’t do it alone. Clip into His sustaining grace and let Him carry you forward.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that Your grace is sufficient for every weakness, every failure, every hard season. Help me stop trying to earn what You’ve already freely given. Teach me to live from what Christ has done for me, not from what I think I can do for You. When I fail, remind me that Your mercy is greater than my mistakes. Fill me with Your sustaining grace so I can run this race well and finish strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
