Navigating Faith Through Dark Seasons

by | Apr 15, 2026

Have you ever poured your heart out to God, desperately asking for help, only to feel like His answer made things worse?

That’s exactly where the prophet Habakkuk found himself. He looked around at a world drowning in violence and injustice and cried out, “God, how long? When will You step in and save us?”

God’s response? “Don’t worry—I’m sending the Babylonians.”

Wait, what? The Babylonians were notoriously brutal conquerors. Habakkuk complained about violence, and God promised to send more violence. It’s like praying for rain during a drought and getting a hurricane instead.

Sound familiar? Sometimes our darkest seasons don’t resolve the way we hope. The diagnosis doesn’t improve. The relationship doesn’t heal. The financial struggle continues month after month. We ask “how long?” and hear only silence—or worse, an answer that makes no sense.

The Reality of Unresolved Tension

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: there’s tension in the unknown, but we have to learn how to live there.

Habakkuk’s story doesn’t wrap up neatly in chapter one. The tension remains. The questions linger. But that’s actually the point—because learning to survive in the darkness is where real faith develops.

Think about your own difficult seasons. They rarely end on your timeline. Even years after losing someone, we still process, still heal, still discover what God is teaching us through that grief. Dark times aren’t microwaveable; they unfold slowly, painfully, transformatively.

Four Ways to Survive the Darkness

So how do we endure when God’s plan doesn’t match our expectations?

Ask God honest questions. Stop complaining about God and start talking to God. He can handle your doubts. The Psalmist boldly asked, “Why do You stand far away when I’m in trouble?” Bring your raw emotions directly to Him.

Identify your doubts and weigh them against Scripture. When you feel abandoned, remind yourself that God promises to be “our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Let truth anchor you when feelings lie.

Find support in other Christ-followers. You’re not meant to walk through darkness alone. Surround yourself with people who will speak life, share Scripture, and remind you of God’s faithfulness when you can’t see it yourself.

Look at the other side. Jesus told Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live even after dying” (John 11:25). Your current circumstance isn’t the whole story. What if this season is an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power, love, or grace in ways you’ve never experienced?

Your Next Step

Maybe you’re in the thick of it right now—the kind of darkness that feels endless. Here’s our encouragement: invite Jesus into it. Not because He’ll instantly fix everything, but because His presence transforms how we endure.

If you’ve never begun a relationship with Jesus, today is your day. He doesn’t promise to eliminate every dark season, but He does promise to walk through them with you—and that changes everything.

If you’re already walking with Him but struggling to see His goodness, be honest with Him this week. Tell Him exactly how you feel. Then pause and listen.

Prayer: Father, when Your answers don’t match our expectations, help us trust Your heart. In seasons that feel impossibly dark, remind us that You are near, that You see us, and that You’re working in ways we can’t yet understand. Give us courage to bring our honest questions to You and patience to wait for Your perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
