Inviting Jesus into our Relationship with Food

Have you ever put up a “Stay Out” sign as a kid, maybe on your treehouse or bedroom door? It was a way to keep certain people out, right? As adults, we might not hang signs, but we still have areas in our lives where we subtly tell Jesus to “stay out.” This new year, let’s change that. Let’s be intentional about inviting Jesus into every part of our lives, starting with something as simple as how we approach food.

Food: More Than Just Nutrition

Food is essential for our nutrition, but it’s also a gift from God meant for our enjoyment and relationships. In Genesis, God provides food for us, and throughout the Bible, we see Jesus caring about people’s physical needs, including their hunger. But here’s the question: Do you see food as a daily gift from God, or has it become an idol in your life?

The Bible encourages us to enjoy food, but not to let it control us. The Apostle Paul reminds us that while we can do anything, not everything is beneficial. Are you a slave to certain foods or habits? Remember, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and how you treat it matters.

Fasting: A Spiritual Practice

Fasting is a powerful way to invite Jesus into your life. It’s not just about abstaining from food; it’s about creating space to be with Jesus. Jesus Himself fasted and taught His disciples to do the same. This January, consider how you can incorporate fasting into your routine. Whether it’s skipping a meal or fasting from a special treat you enjoy, use that time to connect with God.

Food and Relationships

Food is also a tool for building relationships. Jesus often shared meals with others, using those moments to deepen connections and reveal more about Himself. When was the last time you invited someone over for a meal or coffee to talk about life and faith? Sharing food can be a powerful way to see God show up in your relationships.

The point is, following Jesus means submitting every part of our lives to Him, including how we approach food. This week, consider how you can invite Jesus into your meals, your fasting, and your relationships. What area of your life have you been keeping Jesus out of? How can you open that door to Him this year?

Dear Jesus, thank you for the gift of food and the relationships it helps us build. Help us to see every meal as an opportunity to invite you in. Guide us as we fast and seek to grow closer to you. Show us the areas of our lives where we’ve kept you out, and give us the courage to open those doors. Amen.
