Ever notice how January makes us all amateur life coaches? We sign up for gyms, download budgeting apps, and promise ourselves this will be the year everything changes. Then February arrives, and we’re back to our old patterns. Sound familiar?
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: 80% of people quit their gym memberships by April. The status quo is stubborn. Real change—the kind that transforms marriages, breaks addictions, and shifts our relationship with God—requires more than good intentions.
So how do we actually experience breakthrough in the areas where we’re stuck?
Jesus’ Secret to Transformation
Before Jesus changed the world, He had a pivotal breakthrough moment. After His baptism, where the Father declared, “This is my Son, whom I love,” Jesus was immediately led into the wilderness. There, He fasted and prayed for 40 days, facing intense spiritual warfare.
When Jesus emerged from that season, everything changed. Luke’s Gospel tells us He returned “in the power of the Spirit” and began the ministry that would literally divide human history into before and after.
If the Son of God needed prayer and fasting for breakthrough, what makes us think we don’t?
What Fasting Actually Does
Let’s be clear: fasting isn’t a diet plan or a way to impress God. You can’t earn His love—He already loves you completely. Fasting is simply abstaining from something (usually food) to make room for God in your life.
Think of it like this: fasting and prayer are rice and beans. Separately, they’re incomplete. Together, they create something powerful and life-giving. Fasting without prayer is just being hungry and grumpy. But when you pray as you fast, your physical hunger focuses your spiritual hunger into something intense and transformative.
Here’s what happens when we fast:
It exposes our compulsions. Fasting reveals what we’re really dependent on—whether that’s food, control, approval, or something else entirely. It smokes our hidden struggles out into the open where God can deal with them.
It helps us experience God more deeply. Jesus said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Fasting teaches us that we need Him more than we need anything else.
It helps us hear God more clearly. Some of the most powerful moments of divine direction happen during seasons of prayer and fasting.
Your breakthrough story is waiting to be written.
Take Your Next Step
If you’ve never fasted before, start simple—skip a meal and spend that time in prayer. If you’ve fasted before, consider going for a full day or even three days.
As you fast, pray specifically for breakthrough in your life. Pray for our church as we prepare to launch Hope Church South in March. Pray for families with young children who might be called to help establish that new community. Pray for ministry teams, outreach efforts, and families in East Greenwich and North Kingstown.
God wants to bring breakthrough—to your life, your family, and our region. But there are some breakthroughs that only come through prayer and fasting.
Will you join us?
Father, we thank You for inviting us deeper into relationship with You. Give us courage to step into prayer and fasting, trusting that You meet us in our hunger. Break through the stubborn patterns in our lives and prepare us for the new season You’re bringing. We want to follow Jesus more closely. Lead us. In His name, amen.
