Building God’s Kingdom When Life Gets Hard

by | Mar 3, 2026

Ever notice how the moment you decide to follow God wholeheartedly, everything seems to fall apart? You’re not imagining it—and you’re definitely not alone.

The people of Israel discovered this truth firsthand. Fresh from captivity, they returned to Jerusalem with one clear mission: rebuild God’s temple. They built altars, worshiped faithfully, and started laying the foundation. They were doing exactly what God called them to do. Then opposition hit—hard and from every direction.

When Doing Right Feels Wrong

Here’s what we need to understand: the presence of opposition doesn’t mean the absence of God.

We live in a comfort-driven culture. Microwaves, Amazon Prime, Uber Eats—we expect everything instantly and effortlessly. Somehow, we’ve adopted the belief that if following Jesus is difficult, we must be doing something wrong. But that’s not what Scripture teaches.

In Ezra chapter 4, opposition came disguised as friendship. Enemies approached saying, “Let us help you build.” It sounded generous, but compromise lurked beneath the surface. When that didn’t work, they shifted tactics—instilling fear, bribing officials, writing accusations to political authorities. For almost two decades, construction ground to a complete halt.

Sound familiar? Maybe your opposition looks like a supervisor pressuring you to fudge numbers. Perhaps it’s friends encouraging you to compromise your values. Or maybe it’s that internal voice whispering, “This is too hard. God must not be in this.”

Spiritual Warfare Is Real

The Apostle Paul makes it crystal clear: “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness” (Ephesians 6:12). That difficult person isn’t your real enemy—they’re caught in the same spiritual battle you are.

So how do we fight? Paul gives us the armor of God:

  • Belt of truth: Anchor everything to God’s Word
  • Breastplate of righteousness: Remember who you are in Christ
  • Shoes of peace: Carry the gospel everywhere you go
  • Shield of faith: Deflect Satan’s accusations of shame and guilt
  • Helmet of salvation: Protect your mind with your identity as God’s child
  • Sword of the Spirit: Wield Scripture with humility and grace

And through it all? “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion” (Ephesians 6:18).

Keep Your Eyes Fixed on Jesus

When everything feels stalled, when opposition seems overwhelming, Jesus calls us to one thing: keep looking at Him. He’s the “pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). While circumstances rage around you, He’s perfecting something beautiful within you.

The presence of resistance doesn’t mean something is wrong—it often means something is being built. Your faith. Your character. Your dependence on God. The very opposition you face today is shaping you into who God created you to be.

Take Your Next Step

If you’re in the middle of a difficult situation, commit to praying through Ephesians 6 each day this week. Put on God’s armor intentionally, piece by piece.

If you feel stalled despite having clear direction from God, ask Him to help you stay faithful in the waiting. Don’t get sidetracked by discouragement.

Remember: following Jesus doesn’t make life easier—it makes life clearer, more purposeful, and infinitely more fulfilling.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that opposition doesn’t mean You’ve abandoned us. Help us dress ourselves in Your armor daily. When we face resistance, remind us that You’re building something beautiful in us. Give us courage to stand firm, eyes fixed on You. In Your name, Amen.
