Ever Wonder What Makes a Marriage Last?
Marriage is a journey filled with both joy and challenges. Whether you’re single, engaged, or married, understanding the foundation of a strong marriage is crucial. In our sermon series, “For Better or Worse,” we’re exploring how to navigate the ups and downs of marriage by focusing on commitment and prioritization.
The Journey of Commitment
Imagine standing at the altar, exchanging vows with your partner. These vows are not just words; they are commitments to love and cherish each other through life’s highs and lows. The Bible provides a profound perspective on this in Genesis 2:24-25, where it speaks of a man leaving his parents to hold fast to his wife, becoming one flesh. This union requires a deep commitment, a clinging to what truly matters.
We know marriage is not always “roses and sunshine.” There are seasons of better and worse, richer and poorer, sickness and health. Yet, the key to enduring these seasons is a commitment to hold on to what is most important. It’s about building a foundation not on fleeting emotions but on steadfast actions.
Prioritizing What Truly Matters
A successful marriage requires prioritizing God and your spouse. Jesus emphasized the importance of loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). This is the first and greatest commandment, and it sets the tone for all relationships. When God is our priority, we find peace and grace, which we can then extend to our spouse.
Ephesians 5:21-25 calls for mutual submission in marriage, where both partners put each other’s needs above their own. This is not about losing oneself but about finding a deeper connection through selfless love. It’s about laying down your life for your spouse, just as Christ did for the church.
Practical Steps for a Stronger Marriage
- Daily Affirmation: Make a conscious effort to affirm your commitment to God and your spouse every day. This could be through prayer, reading scripture, or simply expressing gratitude for each other.
- Open Communication: Engage in meaningful conversations with your spouse. Be honest, vulnerable, and willing to listen. This builds trust and strengthens your bond.
- Prioritize Time Together: Schedule regular date nights and set boundaries to ensure quality time with your spouse. Let your children see that your marriage is a priority.
- Seek God Together: Pray together as a couple. This not only deepens your spiritual connection but also provides insight into each other’s hearts.
When Was the Last Time You Prioritized Your Marriage?
Reflect on your current relationship. Are there areas where you can improve your commitment and prioritization? Remember, a marriage that thrives is one that practices what it prioritizes. It’s about working through the worse for a better future together.
A Prayer for Your Marriage
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of marriage. Help us to prioritize You in our lives and to love our spouses selflessly. Teach us to hold fast to what truly matters and to build a strong foundation in our relationships. May our marriages reflect Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
By focusing on these principles, we can build marriages that not only survive but thrive, reflecting the love and commitment that God intended. Whether you’re just starting your journey or have been married for years, remember that it’s never too late to prioritize what truly matters.
