Trusting God When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

by | Oct 14, 2026

Have you ever looked at someone else’s life and thought, “They have it so much easier than I do”? Or maybe you’ve faced suffering and wondered if God had forgotten you. In our latest sermon at Hope Church, we launched a new series, “The Grass Isn’t Always Greener,” diving into the book of Job—a powerful story about suffering, integrity, and unwavering faith.

Main Point: You Can Trust Who God Is, Even When You Don’t Understand What God Is Doing

Job was a man of deep integrity, described in Scripture as “blameless and upright.” He loved his family, stewarded his blessings well, and honored God in all he did. But in a series of unimaginable events, Job lost his wealth, his health, and even his children. Through it all, Job didn’t turn away from God. Instead, he grieved honestly, worshiped humbly, and declared, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”

Job’s story challenges the common belief that suffering is always a direct result of personal sin or that God only owes us good things. Sometimes, even when we live faithfully, hardship still comes. The book of Job reminds us that God’s love and presence extend beyond our circumstances—and that our faith is proven not in the absence of suffering, but in our response to it.

Action Steps: How to Live Faithfully in Difficult Seasons

  • Ask the Right Question: Instead of asking, “Why is this happening?” try asking, “What does faithfulness look like right where God has me?” This simple question can reframe your perspective and help you focus on trusting God, even when you don’t have all the answers.
  • Practice Humble Worship: Like Job, be honest about your pain, but don’t withhold your worship. Grieve, lament, and bring your questions to God—but stay open-handed, acknowledging that all you have is a gift from Him.
  • Support Others with Presence and Empathy: Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone suffering is to simply be there. Job’s friends sat with him in silence for seven days before speaking. Your presence can be more powerful than any explanation.
  • Commit to Integrity: In every season—whether suffering, success, or somewhere in between—hold fast to your integrity. Honor God in your actions, even when it’s hard.

Conclusion and Prayer

Life isn’t always greener on the other side. But no matter what season you find yourself in, you can trust the heart of God. He is gracious, merciful, loving, and present—even when life doesn’t make sense.

Let’s pray:

Jesus, help us trust You when we don’t understand what You’re doing. Give us the humility to worship through our pain, the courage to remain faithful in every season, and the compassion to walk alongside others in their suffering. Thank You for Your constant presence and love. Amen.
