Ever feel like your story isn’t dramatic enough to make a difference? You’re not alone. Many Christians hesitate to share their faith because they believe their journey lacks the “wow factor” that moves people. But here’s the truth that might surprise you: Jesus didn’t die because our stories are dramatic—He died because our sins are deadly. And that makes every Christ-follower’s story worth telling.
Your Story Matters More Than You Think
At Hope Church, we recently kicked off a powerful series called “Storytime” with a simple but life-changing premise: every follower of Jesus has a story worth telling because every story points to a Savior worth knowing.
Think about how you came to faith. Was it through a famous evangelist you never met? Maybe. But more likely, it was through a parent, grandparent, friend, or coworker who simply loved you enough to share Jesus with you. When our congregation raised their hands, the difference was staggering—ordinary people sharing their faith outnumbered celebrity conversions by a landslide.
That’s because God doesn’t work exclusively through extraordinary people. He works through ordinary people like you and me who are willing to share what Jesus has done in our lives.
A Simple Framework: Their Story, Your Story, God’s Story
Sharing your faith doesn’t require a theology degree or perfect answers to every question. In Colossians 4:2-6, Paul gives us a practical framework that anyone can follow:
Start with Prayer: Devote yourself to prayer throughout your day—not just in your morning quiet time, but as you drive to work, walk into meetings, or bump into neighbors. Pray for one person God might be calling you to love intentionally. Ask Him to open doors for conversations and soften your heart toward people.
Listen to Their Story: Act wisely toward those outside the faith by genuinely caring about their lives. Ask thoughtful questions: “Tell me about your family.” “How did you get into that career?” “If life has seasons, what season are you in right now?” These questions aren’t manipulation tactics—they’re expressions of authentic love that help you understand where someone is spiritually.
Share Your Story: Connect their struggles to your own journey. Talk about your life before Jesus, the turning point that brought you to Him, and the difference He’s made since. You don’t need drama—you just need honesty about how Jesus lifted the weight of shame, gave you hope, or changed your perspective.
Point to God’s Story: Share three simple truths with biblical backing: God’s unconditional love (Romans 5:8), the reality of our sin (Romans 6:23a), and God’s gift of grace (Romans 6:23b and Romans 10:9). That’s it. You don’t need all the answers—you just need to know these core truths.

- Devote yourself to spontaneous prayer, asking God to show you one person to love intentionally
- Pray for a genuine desire to truly know people, starting with someone you already know
- Learn the framework of their story, your story, and God’s story so you’re ready when opportunities arise
Remember: salvation isn’t produced by your perfect conversation. It’s the Holy Spirit working through your faithful obedience. Your job isn’t to have all the answers—it’s to be a loving companion who listens first and points people gently toward the Savior.
