How Do We Train For Godliness?

Building Spiritual Grit That Transforms Your Daily Life

Ever notice how everyone wants the results of a fit, healthy body, but few people actually enjoy the early morning workouts and meal prep? The same is true in our spiritual lives. We all want to experience deep peace, unshakeable faith, and Christ-like character—but few of us embrace the daily practices that actually produce those qualities.

At Hope Church, we’ve been exploring five ingredients for becoming who God wants you to be. This week’s ingredient? Grit. Not the kind you find in clam chowder (no thank you!), but the determination, perseverance, and stick-to-itiveness that keeps you moving forward even when it’s hard.

What Spiritual Training Really Looks Like

In 1 Timothy 4:7, Paul gives Timothy straightforward advice: “Train yourself in godliness.” That word “train” is athletic language—the same intensity you’d need to prepare for the Boston Marathon. You don’t just wake up one day and run 26.2 miles. It requires months of intentional preparation, discipline, and yes, grit.

Here’s the truth: Who you are becoming is shaped by what you are consistently practicing.

Think about it. If you consistently practice hurry—always rushing, multitasking, distracted—you’re training yourself for anxiety, not peace. If you consistently practice worry, fear grows. But if you consistently practice prayer, trust, and giving your cares to Jesus, peace begins to take root.

Paul reminds us that physical training has some value, but godliness is beneficial in every way—for this life and the life to come (1 Timothy 4:8). When you practice spiritual disciplines, you become a better student, spouse, parent, employee, and friend. You forgive more easily. You love more deeply. You live with greater purpose.

What’s Currently Training You?

We’re all being discipled by something. The question is: what?

For many of us, it’s our phones. Studies show the average student spends 5-6 hours daily on social media—and parents, you’re not far behind. Social media algorithms are designed to be addictive, creating anxiety and comparison rather than contentment.

Maybe it’s entertainment, comfort-seeking, or the constant pressure to perform. These aren’t neutral habits—they’re actively forming you into someone, just not necessarily who God calls you to be.

Ten Spiritual Practices to Consider

So what should we practice instead? Here are ten spiritual disciplines that train you for godliness:

  1. Sabbath – Unplugging to rest and recharge
  2. Solitude – Quieting your soul before God
  3. Prayer – Ongoing conversation with your Creator
  4. Fasting – Creating space for spiritual hunger
  5. Scripture – Letting God’s Word shape your thinking
  6. Community – Growing alongside other believers
  7. Generosity – Living with open hands and heart
  8. Service – Showing up to help others
  9. Witnessing – Sharing what God has done in your life
  10. Mission – Engaging God’s global purposes

Don’t try to tackle all ten at once. Ask God which one He wants you to focus on this season. Spend a month (or two!) going deep in that practice. For the first nine, check out practicingtheway.org for free resources. If missions speaks to you, reach out to our team for guidance.

Your Next Step

Here’s your challenge: Take time this week to examine your daily habits. Ask God to reveal which ones need replacing with practices that help you grow in godliness. Then pick one spiritual discipline and start. Share your commitment with someone you trust and invite them to check in and encourage you.

Remember, spiritual maturity happens intentionally, not accidentally. It takes grit—but the transformation is worth it.

Prayer: Father, give me the courage to honestly examine my daily habits. Show me what’s forming me and what needs to change. Help me choose one spiritual practice and stick with it, even when it’s hard. Train me in godliness so I can become more like Jesus in every area of my life. Give me grit for the journey. In Jesus’ name, amen.
