Christmas Presence

by | Dec 24, 2024

You might be wondering how to make this Advent season truly meaningful. In a world that often equates Christmas with consumerism and endless gift-giving, how do we focus on what truly matters? This Advent, we’re invited to shift our perspective from the hustle and bustle to a season of anticipation and celebration of the Savior’s arrival. It’s about giving more—not in terms of money or material gifts, but of ourselves, our time, and our presence. Let’s explore how we can intentionally give in relational ways, modeling the love of God.

The Advent season is a time to worship fully, to be present, and to give more of ourselves. Our culture often pressures us to focus on material gifts, but the most meaningful gifts are those that come from the heart. Think about the most meaningful gift you’ve ever received. Chances are, it wasn’t about the price tag but the relationship and thought behind it. This season, let’s challenge ourselves to give more relationally, just as God gave us the ultimate gift—His Son, Jesus.

Consider the story of Joseph and Mary. Joseph faced immense cultural pressure to divorce Mary quietly when he discovered she was pregnant. Yet, he chose to listen to God’s call, embracing Mary and the child she carried. This act of relational giving—of choosing love and obedience over societal norms—mirrors the love God has for us. Similarly, Mary accepted her role in God’s plan, despite the challenges it posed. Both Joseph and Mary modeled relational giving by prioritizing God’s will over cultural expectations.

So, how can we give more of ourselves this Advent season? Here are a few ideas:

  • Create a Memory Jar: Write down cherished memories with loved ones on slips of paper. Gift them a jar filled with these memories, encouraging them to read one each week.
  • Start a Shared Journal: Exchange journals with a loved one, writing down questions, fears, and thoughts over the year. Swap them next Christmas to foster deeper conversations.
  • Adventure Box: Fill a box with gift certificates for experiences like zoo visits or ice cream outings. Use them to spend quality time with family or friends.
  • Coffee Time: Gift a favorite coffee blend with the stipulation that it can only be enjoyed together, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations.

These ideas encourage us to be present and intentional, reflecting God’s relational love. When we give more of ourselves, we model the love of God, who sent Jesus to dwell among us. This Advent, let’s focus on being fully present, just as Jesus was present with us.

As we conclude, consider this: What area of your life needs more of your presence and intentionality? How can you model God’s love through relational giving this season? Remember, when we give more of ourselves, we not only bless others but also draw closer to God.

Let’s pray: Lord, help us to embrace the true spirit of Advent by giving more of ourselves. Guide us to be present and intentional in our relationships, modeling Your love. May we find joy in giving relationally, just as You gave us the gift of Your Son. Amen.
