Wordle or the Word?

by | Apr 5, 2022

If you are not one of the millions of people who play Wordle, it is an online game where you have six tries to guess a five-letter word, which changes daily.

For each letter you enter, you are told whether it is in the right spot, the wrong spot, or whether it is not in the word of the day at all. The word of the day is usually a tricky and not-often-used word.

I usually take my first guess when I get up at 5:00 am. Then during my morning walk, I let my brain ponder the word based on the feedback I received on my first guess.

One particular day, I was halfway through the limit of six guesses and still only had two letters: O in the second spot, and E in the last spot. There were no other vowels in the word, and I had used up many popular consonants. While driving the 30+ minutes to an appointment, I pondered the word. I continued to ponder it while waiting, and then on my way home. Then I thought about the absurdity of the fact that I spent well over an hour trying to figure out a silly word but had not yet spent any time with THE Word that day!!

Although I read God’s word every day, I resolved to ponder it at least as much as I ponder the word of the day. After all, one is temporary. The other lasts forever, is living and active, is true, accomplishes its’ purpose, and is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, among so many other things. Why would I — why would you — not ponder it?

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8, ESV)

(Still guessing the word above? The answer is “dodge.”)

Remember When…?

Our family loves to tell stories about the past. My kids, now 12 & 14, love to ask about the things they did as little kids. Their funny sayings and mannerisms. Sometimes we even break out the old pictures and inevitably, someone says, “Remember when…?” There’s a...
