“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” by Melissa Mitchell

by | Nov 10, 2020

Today is a day of waiting. As I write this, it is November 3rd, election day. I am waiting right now for two things, the COVID test results of a loved one and the results of our Presidential election. Lots of waiting. Both things are completely out of my hands, I have done all I can. When you read this a whole week would have passed and hopefully the results of both things will be known. It is hard to wait, hard to have things out of your control.

For several days now the chorus of a beloved hymn from my childhood has been running through my mind..

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

The beginning stanza is:
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
there’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free.

Such comfort to know that God is in control, that I do not need to be fearful or afraid. It is natural to experience these feelings but that is not the end of the story – I have God to rely upon, to bring meaning and purpose out of uncertainty and fear.

According to Micah 6:8 – this is what the Lord wants from me:

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
